HPV is most commonly spread during sexual activity by skin-to-skin contact with an infected person. An estimated 75 per cent of adults in North America will have at least one HPV infection in their lifetime. Although most women will clear the infection, there are some that will have persistent HPV that puts them at risk of developing genital warts or cancer of the cervix.
